Arsenal legend Paul Merson believes Liverpool should make the move to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from the Gunners this summer. The Gabon international has less than 16 months remaining on his current deal with the north London deal and so far, he has shown no indication that he could prolong his stay.
As a result, he has been linked with a possible departure from the Emirates Stadium and Merson feels Aubameyang could prove the perfect player to lead the line for the Reds ahead of Roberto Firmino, he told: “Firmino is a top player but he can go long periods of time without scoring. You still need someone who is a safety net in terms of goals and that’s what Aubameyang can provide.
“Liverpool also need to continue to improve. Winning trophies is hard, but coming back and winning them again is even harder. When you win something, you’ve got to go and improve again. Some teams go and keep the faith in the squad that won and go from there, but you have to keep improving if you want to stay on top.”
The Merseyside giants have obviously excelled with the presence of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Firmino as the front three but quite often, the latter has struggled to score on a regular basis. The Brazilian has netted 10 times during the current campaign and that is definitely an average return when compared to Aubameyang, who has already scored 20 goals.
Liverpool will definitely strengthen the squad with a couple of high-profile players during the summer transfer window and they are understood to be eyeing a new marksman. Timo Werner from RB Leipzig appears as the priority target for them but Klopp could be tempted by a reunion with Aubameyang, who remains in his prime despite approaching his 31st birthday.
